ARFID is a name given to a cluster of eating difficulties. It means Avoidant Restrictive Eating Disorder. It exists in children who were called ‘fussy eaters’ and it exists in adults in various forms. According to ARFID Awareness UK, many children with ARFID are comorbid with an anxiety disorder, with the potential to also develop other mental health conditions. People with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) are more likely to develop ARFID, as are other people with intellectual disabilities, and people with ADHD (NEDA and ARFID Awareness UK). It would also be unusual for bulimia alone to qualify for benefits. Anorexia nervosa is a different matter.

Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) is a relatively new term, that was introduced in 2013 when it first appeared in the 5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5; American Psychiatric Association, 2013). It has also previously been known as Selective Eating Disorder. A child who is already predisposed to ARFID due to biological or genetic makeup may be triggered by environmental or psychosocial situations, such as a traumatic event. Since there can be disrupted eating patterns among other mental illnesses, co-occurring diagnoses – such as anxiety disorders, developmental disabilities, and autism may exacerbate – may also be present. ARFID is a pattern of eating that is common in individuals with autism and is combined with sensory sensitivity. Researchers have found links between autism and eating disorders, especially in thinking profiles. Both disorder patterns overlap with eating and restriction of food intake and potential for significant weight loss.

ARFID or Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder was previously referred to as “Selective Eating Disorder.” While ARFID is like anorexia in that it involves limitations on the amount or type of food consumed, it does not involve concern about body shape, size or weight.

Sometimes ARFID can be triggered by a food-related negative experience, trauma or memory that they had as a child or adult such as choking on food, being sick after consumption or an intolerance which caused them pain or discomfort. Avoidant restrictive food intake disorder, more commonly known as ARFID, is a condition characterised by the person avoiding certain foods or types of food, having restricted intake in terms of overall amount eaten, or both. Someone might be avoiding and/or restricting their intake for a … ARFID is more common in children and young adolescents and less common in late adolescence and adulthood. 1 ARFID is often associated with psychiatric co-morbidity, especially with anxious and obsessive compulsive features. 1 ARFID is more than just “picky eating;” children do not grow out of it and often become malnourished because of the limited variety of foods they will eat. 2 While there are still some unknowns about ARFID, researchers have been able to identify some risk factors.

Since there can be disrupted eating patterns among other mental illnesses, co-occurring diagnoses – such as anxiety disorders, developmental disabilities, and autism may exacerbate – may also be present.
